Welcome to the Politecnico di Milano to all new PhD candidates! We wish you a fruitful research and study time as a PhD candidate at the Politecnico di Milano.

This page provides some practical information about your PhD studies and administrative issues.

IMPORTANT: confirm your scholarship or admission within the deadlines published within the Call you applied for. It not confirmed, the positions will be reassigned to other candidates.

If you do not live in Milan you can book your accommodation:

Please check where you are going to study (it depends on your PhD program) before booking your accommodation. Public transportation information is available at  

Accomodation should be booked as soon as possible.


By the end of July, foreign applicants admitted to a PhD program will receive by mail a letter of admission, which can be submitted at consulates and embassies in order to obtain the visa


Make sure that you are covered by health insurance. If you are a European citizen, conditions may vary depending on your country of origin. Please check your country's Embassy web site. The Politecnico requires that all registered students are covered by health insurance.

The “codice fiscale” is an alphanumeric code of 16 characters issued for free by the “Agenzia delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency) to identify Italian citizens and foreign residents.

You need to have your own “codice fiscale” to: 

  • enroll at an Italian university
  • open a bank account
  • sign any type of contract (rental, phone line, …)
  • register at the National Healthcare Service (SSN) 


If you have a foreign university degree, you need to bring to the offices of the Secretariat by the enrolment deadline: 

  • Declaration of equivalence issued by the diplomatic mission in the country in whose national education system the institution awarding the certificate is included


  • Diploma Supplement in English 

When starting please go to the PhD secretariat of your PhD program to inform them you are starting and, if you have not studied at the Politecnico before, please also go to the PhD Secretariat in via Golgi 42.


To avoid the risk of losing your scholarship, please make sure to check all deadlines and to confirm the acceptance of the scholarship within the deadline and to send in all documents for registration by the deadline.

The first payment of the scholarship (of the basic amount of the first two months, around € 2000) will be paid on December 20 and will be reduced by € 185,58 (regional tax, insurance and administrative costs). Following payments will be given monthly on the 5th of the month. From the second payment, the scholarship increments, if applicable, will also be included (increments are subdivided in monthly installment). The second payment will also include any potential additional increment for the first two months, if applicable.


If you do not speak Italian, attendance of at least one Italian language course is required.
