BITMAP – Brain injury and trauma monitoring using advanced photonics

Two PhD Positions available at the Department of Physics: 

- One on advanced laser spectroscopy techniques for non-invasive assessment of deep tissue properties, in particular in the brain  

-  Another on  the development of novel photonics approaches for imaging through highly scattering media (like biological tissues).

ACT5G - Anticipatory Networking Techniques in 5G and Beyond

The rapid growth in mobile broadband network data lead to the unprecedented speed of 4G LTE deployment. The evolution calls for sustainable capacity growth and performance improvement in the next generation of wireless systems, namely 5G. The success of 5G heavily relies on delivering satisfactory user experience at a low operational cost. In this context, research and development (R&D) is required not only for technological innovation at the device level, but also management system design for the flexibility necessary to predict and adapt to network usage. To this end, anticipation is a promising and new approach. By predicting and adapting to upcoming events at various time scales, an anticipatory-enabled 5G network dramatically improves the operation quality and efficiency in comparison to the existing systems. Deploying anticipatory networking with effective prediction of network behaviour offers a twin advantage: First, resources ranging from spectrum and power to network interfaces buffers can be managed optimally. Second, network operators can jointly plan how to share infrastructure and resources to provide service with substantially reduced expenditure.

VPH-CaSE: VPH-Cardiovascular Simulation and Experimentation for Personalised Medical Devices

The VPH-CaSE project is focused on state-of-the-art developments in personalised cardiovascular support, supported by simulation and experimentation, building on the foundations of the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) Initiative. The research will focus on three research clusters: (i) Cardiac tissue function and cardiac support, (ii) Cardiovascular haemodynamics - pathology and intervention, (iii) Image-based diagnosis and imaging quality assurance.

MUSICA (MUltiSectoral Integrative approaches to CArdiac care)

MUSICA  is proposed by a team of universities, companies and hospitals from 4 EU countries (Italy, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Belgium). The main scope of MUSICA is to structure a new trans-sectoral and multidisciplinary network capable of developing research and technology with no barriers between academia, industries and clinicians in the cardiac arena, and of shaping young researchers with a novel and truly multidisciplinary mindset, capable of developing clinical- and business-oriented technology including tools for the advancement of base knowledge. Natural Gas will be one of the key parameters in the European energy policy for the next decades. Forecasters predict that natural gas consumption in the EU will double over the next 25 years. European natural gas consumption currently represents approximately 17% of world consumption and its imports are expected to reach slightly over 80% of total consumption by 2030. To tackle this challenge, the EU is investing heavily in natural gas equipment, as demonstrated by the construction of the Nabucco pipeline in Turkey.

A deep understanding and high-level training in the experimental and numerical tools for investigating natural gas combustion in new burners are of upmost importance for future developments. In particular, it is extremely important to develop academic and research studies on new combustion processes to make best use of natural gas, while limiting its environmental impact. These new combustion processes (regenerative burners, flameless combustion, combustion of highly diluted mixtures or oxy-combustion) are very different from existing technologies and constitute real technological breakthroughs.
